Norwegian company Xplora Technologies, recognized for its kid-friendly smartwatches, has formed a strategic partnership with Finnish HMD Global. This collaboration aims to broaden Xplora's reach into the mobile phone market for both younger users and the aging population. Xplora plans to roll out basic phones and smartphones tailored for kids, while HMD Global will oversee hardware development, storage, and distribution.
Thanks to this partnership, Xplora can concentrate on enhancing its subscription services and tap into HMD Global's expertise in device production. Furthermore, these new devices will feature a family-friendly IoT platform, parental controls, and pre-installed SIM connections, all geared toward ensuring safe digital environments for young users.
This venture is in line with HMD Global’s "The Better Phone" initiative, which advocates for healthier smartphone habits among children. The inaugural Xplora-HMD products are anticipated to launch at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in March 2025, providing an exciting new option for parents seeking safer digital devices for their children.
Perhaps this could lead to the long-awaited Nokia smartwatch under the HMD banner. For now, it stands as a classic HMD partnership, reminiscent of the rebranded Nokia C32 M-Kopa phone in Africa.
